Iridium is a hard and brittle metal, with the most resistance to
corrosion of any metal. It was used to make the standard meter bar,
housed in Paris. A worldwide layer of iridium buried underground first
led scientists to the theory that a meteorite struck the Earth 65
million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs.
